Promote The Vote 2022

This year Promote the Vote and a coalition of voting-rights groups, including LWVMI, seeks to amend the state constitution to expand these voting rights to:

• Allow nine days of early voting

• Fund absentee ballots with postage and a tracking system for the ballot location

• Continue to allow voters to sign an affidavit attesting to their identity

• Allow public sources and charities to fund local elections (i.e., church voting venues)

• Allow voters to register for absentee ballots for all future elections

• Require ballot drop boxes for every 15,000 voters in a municipality

• Establish that post-election audits can only be conducted by state and local officials

LWV of Northern Lower Michigan has petitions for volunteers to circulate for Promote the Vote 2022

We have 6 team leaders ready to get you started. Some people may have the ability to collect a lot of signatures and some may only be able to collect a few among family, neighbors, and friends. All are welcome.

Public Forum: Gun Violence in Michigan and Preventing Firearm Injury

May 11, 5:30pm-6:30pm

Join the LWVNLM public forum expert presentation on the current state of gun violence and firearm injury in Michigan and explore evidence-based prevention strategies. 

The presentation will be led by Jessica Roche from The University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention. As firearm injury and death rates continue to increase, there is a great need for data-driven solutions. For other serious public health problems, such as motor vehicle crashes, our nation has turned to scientific evidence to prevent injury and firearms should be no different. 

The U of M Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention gathers data to generate knowledge and takes input from nonacademic stakeholders, including firearm owners, to advance solutions to decrease gun injury in the US.

Lots of Petitions Circulating!

Bridge Michigan is keeping track of the more than a dozen possible ballot issues that may go before Michigan voters. It’s important for voters to know what we are signing! The article "2022 Michigan petition drives tracker: What to know about election proposals" will be continually updated here:

The League of Women Voters Northern Lower Michigan (LWVNLM) is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We take action on public policy positions established through member agreement. We do not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

LWVNLM recognizes that the League experience uniquely equips members for public life at many different levels and encourages members to use their knowledge and abilities on an individual basis. Non-board members are encouraged to participate fully in partisan activities as individuals, not as LWVNLM representatives.
