Advocacy Committee

You don’t have to do everything. Just do one thing, something, anything & then do the next right thing.

If you’re interested in joining this committee or have questions about their work, let us know here.

Subgroups

We realize that trying to follow everything that is going on is too overwhelming.  Pick a subgroup and just one item each month that you can do to help make a difference. Read descriptions of each subgroup below the survey.

Action Alerts

Action alerts take just a few minutes of your time!  Can you do a couple today?

LWVUS:

  • Tell Congress to Oppose Federal Interference in DC

  • Tell Your Representatives to Protect Equal Voting Rights- (includes JLVRAA, see voting rights below…)

  • Hold Congress Accountable for the One Big Beautiful Bill

  • Reject Anti-Voter Policies

LWVMI

  • Federal Register: Don’t let the Roadless Rule be repealed. Due by September 19th .

    • Add this suggested comment “I oppose repealing the Roadless Rule. This attack puts nearly 60 million acres of forest at risk — land that protects our water, climate, and future. Giving the public only 14 business days to respond is a deliberate attempt to silence us. When the rule was created, 1.6 million people spoke up. Keep the Roadless Rule in place and give the people a real chance to be heard.”

  • The Petoskey Chamber, has expressed interest in working with LWVNLM to educate the community and inform our businesses to be proactive regarding ICE, immigration and worker’s rights.

  • We have been distributing red cards in our community and we plan to deliver signs of solidarity to businesses.

Health/Medicaid/SNAP

  • Create postcards to distribute or mail in our community.

  • Post information at places in our community that may be affected by Medicaid cuts.  Many of our care facilities depend on Medicaid money and will be diminished, as well as individuals will lose benefits.

  • Stop the pilot program requiring senior citizens to have prior authorization for some health care services. AI will be used to make these decisions.

Environment

  • Protect our Environment: Oppose HB4007, 4027, 4028, 4283- see Action Alerts above

  • Fight climate lies with the Truth Brigade: Wednesday, September 10

    • Indivisible’s Truth Brigade is the nation's largest grassroots disinformation-countering program, and this September, we’re confronting the lies behind the devastating dismantling of climate protections that harm our vulnerable communities most.

    • On September 10th,  Abbie Richards of EcoTok and Media Matters will show us how the media, corporations, and other bad actors fuel confusion or apathy about the climate. Then, we’ll provide tools and info to fight back with the truth.  We can’t be silent as lies replace science and disasters are exploited for profit.

“I oppose repealing the Roadless Rule. This attack puts nearly 60 million acres of forest at risk — land that protects our water, climate, and future. Education

  • We will be watching how cuts are affecting our schools, classrooms, and students and taking action when we can.
